Piazzolla’s devout, friend and
photographer

This book of photographs is a venerable one, since nobody is or will be ever be able to produce anything similar: its protagonist exists only through the genius that pervades his work, and because it was obviously meant to belong to a very close and selected group of friends, given the places –cities, countries- and the time at which the pictures were taken.

I have had the honour of being a friend of both, Astor Piazzolla and Carlos Carrizo, and a stroke of fate allowed me to share frequent moments with them in Buenos Aires, Bahía Blanca and Paris, In addition, Carrizo – who is an excellent photographer with an intuitive mastery of light and timing, a major virtue for anyone in his profession or with a vocation for art and documentary work – has also been a fan of the artist that this book evokes at precious moments of his career as from 1965.

Together with Piazzolla’s, it includes the testimony given by famous musicians that formed part of his various musical ensembles, a quintet, a sextet, an octet and a nonet, as well as the group that played María de Buenos Aires – the light opera we composed and first performed on May 8 1968 at Sala Planeta, precisely where the author of this wonderful book, not by chance, occupied a seat and, who ever since then, has been a friend of mine.

Whoever has this book of excellent and moving images in a bookcase will be the possessor of portion of the physiognomy – and even the soul – of one of the major musicians of the 20th Century.

ASTOR, THE DISCOVERY

Astor Piazzolla’s music broke into my adolescence like fresh and clear rain. It settled in my heart and has deeply moved me since then. I considered it romantic, gloomy, sensual and captivating with a challenging and highly expressive vitality from the first moment.

During the mid 50s, I used to listen to Troilo, Pugliese and Salgan’s tangos and Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw’s jazz. But Astor’s music was different because of its originality, boldness, swing and power. It was tango with a strong feeling in every sense.

I clearly remember when my brother Juan José came home with a 78 rpm record and we listened to Lo que vendrá (1954) recorded by his string orchestra, a great revelation in tango and in my life. Later he bought the recording with the Buenos Aires Octet.

On October 8, 1961, Astor arrived in Bahía Blanca for the first time with his New Tango Quintet to offer four shows at the Palace Cinema. The next day, after performing on the radio, I got his first autograph. This was the starting point of a very enriching personal relationship which lasted until this death.

ADIOS, ASTOR

GOOD BYE, ASTOR

Astor Piazzolla’s last concert at the Opera theatre in June 1989 was a kind of premonition, as it was called “Adiós Buenos Aires” (Good bye Buenos Aires).

With his new sextet, he showed how peremptory his music was and the heterogenous audience was not so strict judging his music as at the beginning.

His repertoire included about 20 pieces composed from 1960 to 1989, including the famous Adios Nonino.

He told the spectators his obligation was to change his music everytime. He was nervous before each performance but self confident when he placed his bandoneón on his right leg and played it with amazing passion.

Piazzolla’s music transfers the human voice to the bandoneón and, in the way, expresses all emotions and feelings of the human being: he laughs, screams, cries, dances, demands, converses, tells a story.

I would like to pay homage to him for his artistic honesty, his indeclinable fight to defend his truth and for his timeless and universal work.

The expressive photo on the next page was taken before he went onto the stage.

I also wish to thank him for enriching my spirit and bringing happiness to my life every time I vibrate with his marvelous and beautiful music.
